Darker Shades in Spring

I have been wanting to photograph this outfit for sooo long now, and yesterday I finally just did it. Everything I am wearing is a bargain, because that’s simply how I shop.

&& I am putting an emphasis on more dark colors in my wardrobe right now even though it’s spring just because when you’re a parent, dark colors look best with all those unexpected but expected spills and stains 😉 And I’ve always found that I feel most comfortable when wearing darker shades, but I have to be careful because I’m super fair skinned (like on a vampire level) that I don’t want to appear washed out. So wearing blacks and dark browns is great, but I try to always remember to lighten it up just a little on the top.

Stan and I both collect elephant things. Whether it’s a shirt like this one or a figurine we at least take notice to it.

I found this shirt on a clearance rack at JC Penny’s for only $10, and I was immediately sold! Bright colors easily catch my eye, and orange just happens to be one of my favorite colors to wear overall. As  you can tell with my matching purse and shoes 😉 So this outfit was fun to put together, because I already had pieces that matched it.

Before I talk about the details of this outfit, I just want to say how happy I am with my hair-finally! It’s been a long recovery it seemed like from all of the bleaching and dying throughout the years. And when I found out I was pregnant a little over two years ago, I vowed to myself to not ever permanently dye my hair again. So here it is, no dye, just trims, and all natural and I couldn’t be happier about it.

And about this outfit…this top is from a store that I used to be a stylist at (unfortunately they’re not in business anymore) it was called SYLK. The top is actually a bodysuit which for me is even better. It’s a much easier style to tuck into bottoms and it stays in place. Plus with the cut out sleeves, it’s a look that can truly go from evening to night effortlessly.

The shorts were a find at Forever 21 years ago, and I can’t get over the button fly, high waist look. I wish all of my pants and shorts looked like this pair. && I left a link below to some similar shorts that I found online 😀

We leave for South Dakota in two weeks! It’s bittersweet for so many reasons, but I am excited for my family there to meet my little family! One night when we are there we will be attending the South Dakota Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and I wanted something casual and edgy to wear. So as always I planned my outfit in advance haha. Black jeans and leopard print are some of my favorites to wear as you’ve seen in former posts. So I thought for this event I would wear those two things with a pair of kitten heels and a leather jacket because I imagine the weather will be a little chilly.

This scarf is a favorite of mine. Not just because it came from Stan’s family, who happen to be some of the kindest people ever to exist. But also because it’s covered in elephants and shimmery material 🙂 In Vegas though, I’m not one to wear a scarf traditionally too often so my scarfs usually pile up and collect dust in my closet more often than not.

It wasn’t until I heard about tying it into a vest that I really started wearing it a lot. Here is a link for a quick tutorial of how I did it for this specific look.

So feel free to give a similar look a try if you think it’s something you’d like!

Last weekend we held a small service for my dad in a place that was so very special to him.

We had a service for him last summer too shortly after he left this earth, and it was beautiful. But this. This is what he wanted for as far back as I can remember. So we honored him in the desert that he loved so much. The desert that he taught me to love too.

We carried our hiking sticks, cameras just as he used too. And we admired the rock art that was left so many years ago. It all felt right, and it all came together superbly. The views were spectacular , and so were the stories that we shared about him, and what he meant to each one of us.

I wish everyone who loved him could have been there, but with the pictures I’ve shared I hope everyone can feel that they were in a way.

And I will always wish that we had more time with him, especially for Emma’s sake. Because a year was not long enough for the two of them together. But he will always live on in our hearts, and in the desert that he showed us all how to cherish.

“His imprint was made on this desert by walking for miles and miles in search of footprints that had gone before him.” -Sandie L. (Quoted from my step-mom)

I can’t believe I almost parted with this dress on several occasions! It is now one of my favorite things in my closet, and I’ve learned that coral is one of my best colors to wear too. Huh, who knew?

I scored this dress ages ago in a Goodwill. It was like new and it’s an Elle piece. Two must haves for me. Worn by itself it appears a little baggy, so I help pull it together with my Lauren Conrad jacket. It simply helps to define my shape a little more. && these shoes are the greatest and super comfortable. I’m so happy the weather says it’s spring now so I can wear them all the time.

Tea and a muffin with a dear friend who is about to continue her traveling adventures-this time in the Peace Corps for the next few years. So we chatted, caught up and snapped a few pictures.

The top I’m wearing is new, it was only $4 at WetSeal and I love it. I love it mostly because in the summer I don’t have to wear it with a jacket or a bra haha. It has a lovely low cut back which is my favorite look, and it is lightweight so I won’t feel like I’m suffocating in fabric when the weather warms up. I will share a more close up, detailed post about the top in the months to come, when it’s warmer and I can show you how I wear it with out the winter attire around it.

I’ve worked at several retail stores in the past ten years, and they all have their share of different dress codes. But a few of them allowed me to wear just about anything I wanted. && this was one of my favorite outfits that I had put together. I wore it quite a bit, sometimes with the tank top hanging out, and other times I would tuck it in for a more classic look. What do you think?
